James Newitt (1981, Hobart) is an Australian visual artist and filmmaker born in Tasmania and based in Lisbon, Portugal. His practice is research-oriented — linked to a process of public engagement and contextual and historical research. He has presented his work in solo and group exhibitions across Europe, Australia, and Asia over the past 20 years, and has received numerous grants, international residencies, and awards in recognition of his work. He has taught Time-Based Media at the University of Tasmania, School of Creative Arts, and has been a visiting professor at the City University of New York, at Sound Image Culture in Brussels, and at the Tromsø Art Academy, University of Tromsø, Norway. He has won several awards, including the Multimedia Art Grant from the Stiftung Niedersachsen at the Edith-Russ-Haus (2022); the Samstag International Visual Arts Grant (2012); the City of Hobart Art Award (2011); and the Qantas Contemporary Art Award (2009).
